What you need

It has to be firmly fixed to the wall before you putty the foam. What you’ll need for this work, as well as any future work:

  • Foam adhesive – usually regular tile adhesive is used;
  • Umbrella dowels with a wide cap for reliable fixation of the insulation;

  • Plastic, metal or fiberglass mesh for reinforcing the putty layer;
  • A deep penetration primer that ensures reliable adhesion of the surface to the finishing layer;
  • Leveling putty or decorative plaster.

These are the components. The equipment you’ll need includes various-width spatulas, a drill with a mixer, rollers, brushes, and a grater with sandpaper. Special consideration needs to be given to the materials used to putty foam plastic. Both general-purpose compounds and unique blends for polystyrene-based materials are utilized for this. Putties from Ceresit, Ekomix, Stolit, and other brands have excellent qualities. It suffices to carefully review the manufacturer’s recommendations on the packaging, which specify the application area, when making a decision.

Using common cement-sand mixtures, foam is frequently used to plaster the facades. In this instance, selecting an alkalis-resistant grid is required for reinforcement.

Be mindful! The mixture cannot be used to decorate the facade if it is meant for internal use. Conversely, foam facade putty should only be applied outside. Additionally, pay close attention to the material’s manufacture date, shelf life, and storage circumstances.

Once the thermal insulation is adhered to the wall and fastened with "umbrellas," the most important step is applying putty and finishing. Before anything else, though, you must adhere a reinforcing mesh to the insulation; otherwise, after two to three years, the leveling mixture will begin to collapse or crack.

Installing the mesh

It is thought that the plaster layer will be stronger the higher the mesh density. The best option would be a mesh with cells that are roughly 5 mm apart, as very dense material is difficult to glue. The following is the work technology:

  • First, all corners, door and window slopes are pasted with mesh. To do this, cut a strip about a meter long and 30 cm wide and bend it in half lengthwise to form an even edge;
  • Then, tile adhesive or a universal mixture is applied to the corners to be pasted with a layer of 3-4 mm, the mesh is applied to them and pressed, smoothing and pressing it into the solution with a spatula using "herringbone" movements – from the corner down and to the sides;

Advice: If the adhesive solution is made a little bit thinner than the manufacturer suggests, it will work more easily.

  • Having dealt with the corners, they start pasting the walls. Since the adhesive solution dries quickly enough, this must be done in small areas with an area of ​​about one square meter, respectively, cutting the net into pieces;
  • In the same layer of 3-4 mm, part of the wall is covered and, using a wide spatula, the mesh is pressed into a damp solution with movements from the center and to the sides;
  • It should completely “drown” in the solution, so if necessary, a little more mixture can be drew on a spatula;
  • The next piece of the grid is glued with an overlap on the previous one 10 cm;

Suggestions. Place the first grid piece such that there is a 5–10 cm wide free edge to help hide the joints. Before adhering the following piece, apply the solution for it.

  • When the mixture with the mesh glued into it dries, the walls are rubbed with a float to remove obvious bulges and irregularities.

Application of putty

Before proceeding with the alignment of the insulated wall with putty or its decoration by decorative plaster, the surface must be treated with deep penetration with a deeper primer. She will give her greater strength and provide good adhesion to the finishing layer.
Some masters miss this moment, believing that adhesion of materials is already satisfactory. Indeed, if putty is carried out by the same universal mixture that glued a mesh, and especially if the work is carried out in the interior, you can do without a primer.
But if you ask how to put the foam on the outer wall correctly, the answer will be unequivocal: you need to primer!
The puttying process itself is quite simple: the leveling mixture is transferred with a small spatula to a large one, 35-40 cm wide, and it is distributed over the surface with smooth movements in a layer from 3 mm to centimeter.

Kindly take note. Work-related putty density should be reasonable. The mixture should flow off the spatula slowly rather than dropping off with all of its mass.

  • If for painting or wallpapering, then the wall is pulled out with a rule;

  • If you want to create a textured surface with your own hands, then after applying the putty to a small area, you need to form a decorative texture, not allowing the mixture to dry. For this, use various devices: a float, a comb, a sponge with large pores, special stamps and rollers.

After the leveling layer dries, it is rubbed, as in the case of a mesh. This work should be done no later than 3-4 days after the end of the work, otherwise the putty will become too hard and it will be difficult to rub it down.
After the grout is followed by priming and the final decorative finish – painting, decorative plaster, wallpaper gluing, etc.D. depending on the operating conditions of the surface and your desire.
The choice of primer also depends on the type of finish. If regular primer is used under wallpaper and paint coatings, then under decorative plaster the instructions require applying mixtures that contain fine-grained quartz sand. By creating a rough surface, it ensures high-quality adhesion of finishing layers.
