Pros and cons of liquid wallpaper: advantages and disadvantages of the material, installation

A novel and adaptable wall covering that has grown in popularity recently is liquid wallpaper. It is applied like plaster, as opposed to traditional wallpaper, giving walls a smooth, textured finish. For those wishing to add a touch of elegance to their home, this material is an appealing option because it presents a novel approach to interior design.

But liquid wallpaper has pros and cons of its own, just like any other material. You can determine whether it’s the best option for your space by being aware of these. When making a choice, it’s critical to consider the advantages and disadvantages, regardless of your preference for its visual appeal or your interest in the installation procedure.

Liquid wallpaper

What is it

It should be noted that although liquid wallpaper and decorative plaster have similar application methods and intended outcomes, they are entirely different materials. The elements that go into making these combinations differ.

This color spectrum is pretty wide.

Liquid wallpaper is a decorative liquid coating that contains silk and/or cellulose fibers, coloring pigments, binding adhesives, natural fungicides, and extras like mica glitter or mineral (marble, granite) chips to enhance the decorative effect.

Such a finishing is originally sold in dry form as flakes and packaged in 1 kg cellophane bags. It can also be purchased in buckets as a thick solution, but in this instance, the composition needs to be diluted with water per the instructions.

Liquid wallpaper comes in three varieties, each with unique compositional benefits and drawbacks.

  1. silk,
  2. cellulose or,
  3. silk-cellulose – this determines the type of their surface.

The best coating is one made of silk fibers since it has a high level of resistance to UV radiation and does not deteriorate in direct sunlight. As a result, the coating’s service life is greatly extended.

When it comes to price, silk-cellulose and cellulose coating will be less expensive, but this will also result in a shorter service life because cellulose ages and loses color.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits of liquid wallpaper include the ability to achieve a range of finishes.

  • If you compare liquid wallpaper or regular wallpaper (roll), then the former has a clear advantage when partially renovating a room – this is the ability to replace them in a separate area without violating the integrity of the composition. That is, here, as in a painting, painted with watercolors or oil – you put the necessary paints on the canvas directly over the old image and get either a restoration product or a completely new work. The fact is that when applying the mixture there are no seams, and you also do not have to select a pattern.
  • If there are many protrusions and corners on the surface, then sometimes it is simply impossible to paste over it with ordinary roll wallpaper – the plane does not allow it, and here liquid finishing comes to the rescue. You can apply it with your own hands to any plane accessible to the spatula.
  • If you are interested in what is cheaper – wallpaper or liquid wallpaper, then it should be said that in general, repairs with a liquid coating will cost less, since for this you will not have to separately level the wall if there are small potholes, cracks or differences on it. In addition, there is good hiding power with a layer thickness of 1-2 mm, which is soft and pleasant to the touch.
  • Another plus for “wet” finishing in the question of what is cheaper – liquid wallpaper or regular, you can put the solution for the fact that when drying, many pores are formed there, which serve for thermal insulation, therefore, you win on saving energy resources. Also, such a coating acts as a good soundproofing.

  • If you are in a hurry with the repair, then the main disadvantages of liquid wallpaper will be that they need at least 48 hours to dry due to their porous structure. In addition, the material has a very high hygroscopicity, and this suggests that it is strictly contraindicated to use it in rooms with high humidity, and direct water contact with the finished surface is also not recommended.

Installation

Liquid wallpaper requires surface priming, just like any other "wet" finish, so you can set the stage for successful adhesion. If the mixture you bought is ready to use, add the necessary amount of water and apply it to the surface as soon as the soil dries.

It is best to mix the contents of each bag by hand because the ingredients are completely safe for the skin. Then, pour everything back into the bag. Dry flakes for work should be soaked beforehand. After at least 12 hours of soaking, this mixture should be supplemented with water as needed.

Although the first method is more convenient because of the material’s structure, liquid wallpaper is typically applied to the surface using a spatula, such as a trowel, as shown in the above photo. However, paint rollers can also be used for this purpose. In order to create a drawing, you should wait for the first layer to dry before applying the next one. However, you can also leave a space open so that a different color solution can be added.

Suggestion made. The spatula’s tilt controls how thick the coating layer is applied; the more the tool’s blade tilt (i.e., the sharper the angle), the less the coating will be cut and the thicker the layer. The thickness decreases with increasing angle between the blade and the surface.

Liquid wallpaper provides a seamless, textured appearance with an easy application process, making it a unique and decorative wall finish. Even though it offers superior soundproofing and insulation, it can be more expensive than traditional wallpaper and may need a particular setting to be installed correctly. Homeowners can determine whether it’s the best option for their space by being aware of its advantages and disadvantages.

Pros of Liquid Wallpaper Cons of Liquid Wallpaper
Easy to apply and repair More expensive than traditional wallpaper
Seamless finish with a unique texture Limited color options compared to paint or traditional wallpaper
Good for covering small wall imperfections Requires a certain level of skill for even application
Environmentally friendly and non-toxic Can be sensitive to moisture, not ideal for bathrooms
Allows walls to breathe, reducing mold risk May need a protective finish in high-traffic areas

With a blend of style and functionality, liquid wallpaper provides a distinctive and adaptable wall décor option. It provides a seamless finish that can be tailored to fit a variety of interior styles, and it is simple to apply and repair. This makes it a desirable option for people wishing to add something new to their walls.

However, there are drawbacks to liquid wallpaper as well. In places with high levels of moisture, it might not be as durable as traditional wallpaper and can be more costly. It also takes some skill to apply, particularly if you want a smooth, uniform texture.

When weighing the benefits and drawbacks, people who value personalization and an opulent atmosphere in their homes will benefit most from liquid wallpaper. It can be a gorgeous addition to your house if you’re willing to put in the time and money.
