Creating craquelure

Any surface or object can be made to look old and antique by using the craquelure painting technique. Paint that is drying and cracking starts to show cracks in front of your eyes.

By hand, with homemade tools or even just a finger, we can measure the thickness of the cracks. Also, every time a small lightning bolt occurs, its direction will be different. This effect is the result of the top coat of paint drying quickly.

Selecting acrylic paint with a cracked appearance has the following benefits:

  • Decorative look reminiscent of antiquity or antiquity.
  • A large selection of color combinations, both layers of paint.
  • Affordable price for any consumer.
  • Ecologically friendly, as it is water-based.
  • Air permeability, allows the surface to breathe.
  • Good waterproofing, can be used in damp rooms.
  • Masking function, easily hides small surface irregularities.
  • Ease of use, applied like regular paint.

There are two types of craquelure: one-step and two-step. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Counseling! It is worthwhile to prepare the painting surface before applying craquelure.

One-step craquelure

The process of making craquelure at home is simple.

The following provides detailed instructions for creating a one-step craquelure:

  • Prepare the surface of the walls or the object to be painted. Walls, metal or wood need to be primed. The primer will improve the adhesion of the paint to the surface and this will be the color of our cracks, but if you want to leave the original color, just apply a colorless acrylic varnish. Surfaces made of other materials are easy enough to degrease.
  • Apply the base, main paint, in a thick layer. If we use spray paint, shake it before applying. If the paint for walls with a crackle effect in a can, apply it with a roller, small objects are better painted with a brush.
  • Apply a thick layer of crackle varnish on top and let it almost dry. You can check the readiness by touching it with your finger, if it sticks, but does not paint, then it is ready.
  • After about an hour, apply the second paint for the top coat. Cracks begin to appear immediately. If you apply a thicker layer, you will get large cracks, and a thin layer, you will see a fine web.
  • After a few hours, the paint will dry completely and the object can be used. You can speed up the process with a regular hair dryer.

Counseling! When applying paint, you can prevent smudges by applying layers gradually and giving them some time to dry.

Two-step craquelure

Typically, two-step craquelure is applied over decoupage or for painting. It resembles fractured varnish more.

  • The first layer is applied in several layers of shellac varnish, waiting for each to dry. It can be lightened or dark, the last one gives a patination shade.
  • As soon as it dries completely, apply the craquelure varnish. It should not be accelerated in drying, let it dry in the sun on its own.
  • As soon as cracks begin to appear, the top varnish can be washed off with warm water. We rub the cracks themselves with oil paint or even eye shadow.
  • After the product has completely dried, we fix the process with shellac varnish. This way, your work will not lose its decorative appearance for a long time.

Counseling! The best thing to do is use a sponge or natural fabric rag to rub the cracks.

Types of craquelure

Using the craquelure painting method, the final result is determined by the paint and varnish selection.

  • Classic style craquelure – these are well-defined deep and frequent cracks. This style is most often used for the background of large decoupage works.
  • Wood style craquelure – the cracks of this style resemble tree bark, they are densely located and quite deep.
