Cleaning is not an issue anymore, but unwinding with friends, sipping kvass after a bath, enjoying hot tea with homemade pastries, losing weight, enhancing one’s physical and mental well-being, letting go of the past, and decompressing are all reasons why this place needs a unique atmosphere. One could argue that taking procedures in a Russian bath involves a unique ritual:
- Go to the dressing room and take off your sweaty clothes.
- Stand in the washing room under the shower and prepare your body for the main action – visit the steam room.
- You need to start steaming on the bottom shelf, visit the second shelf after at least 10 minutes of rest outside the steam room, then again take a 10-20 minute break and proceed on the top shelf. The body is relaxed, the pores are open, salts and toxins leave your body.
This is why it is recommended to visit the bathhouse on an empty stomach, drinking herbal infusion, compote, juice or tea. - Considering the purpose of the washing compartment for a bathhouse, where the body is quickly cooled with a shower or simply a bucket of cool water after a steam room, it is better to provide a small pool. The structure is intended for yourself, is done with your own hands and only then for everyone else, who can also be involved in collective work on construction and interior decoration of premises, and there are no problems in the construction of a pool, but what a joy for everyone to lie steamed in cool water.
- The rest room is visited during breaks between the steam room, the pool for leisurely conversations and communication, relaxing on a bench or a sofa.
Since the bathhouse dislikes hurriedness, it allots prearranged free time that is untouchable for any pressing issues.

Requirements for the wash room
The ideal low temperature and air humidity make the washroom unique; under these circumstances, one can stay for extended periods of time and feel very comfortable. The restroom needs to have good air circulation so that used materials can easily exit the space and be replaced by new airflows. When a room is poorly ventilated, there is mold and mildew in the sink, there is a high concentration of moisture, an unpleasant stench, and there is nothing to breathe, it becomes less enjoyable to be in. Thus:
- Forced ventilation is arranged in the form of a supply and exhaust pipe of the same size. The pipes are equipped with valves that regulate air circulation.
Be aware that airflows are directed toward secondary rooms, from the restroom to the entrance hall.
- The exhaust pipe is brought out above the roof, which ensures a more efficient air outlet.
- The supply pipe is mounted two meters above the ground.
- Forced ventilation works more efficiently, driven by an electric motor that is triggered when the light is turned on, if connected to the electrical wiring.
- The washroom cannot do without hot and cold water. An excellent option for connecting a centralized water supply and arranging a water supply in a bathhouse.
- In the bathhouse, in the old-fashioned way, a container with water is installed on the stove, although in the steam room a simple container with a ladle is enough. A storage water heater will provide water to the washroom.
- Various types of massage, rubbing with various compounds that help to lose weight or get rid of cellulite, are performed in the washroom. Here it is necessary to have a massage trestle bed measuring 180×65 cm.
On bath days, the trestle bed (table) is installed in a space with free access to it from all sides, the rest of the time it can stand near the wall. The material for making the table should be light, although the arrangement is an individual matter.
Decoration of the washroom
The restroom’s flooring is completed before the walls. Special attention should be paid to the floor because many falls result in serious injuries. The bathroom can have self-leveling flooring made of glazed ceramic, marble, or granite tiles. To prevent slipping, wooden grates (stands), rubber matting, or slates are used. Wooden flooring is another option. Certain kinds of wood are resistant to moisture and can support heavy loads. Choosing finishing materials can be aided by looking through pictures or watching videos on websites.
Water drainage arrangement
Any kind of flooring should have its water drainage diverted at least three meters outside the restroom. A dug hole is the most basic and commonly used in folk practice. Thus:
- 0.5 m is retreated from the foundation and a hole is dug at least 1.5 m deep to prevent the drain water from freezing on frosty days.
- A trench of a certain length is dug outward from the pit, at the end of which a drain well with a volume of 1.5 m³ or more is made.
- The surfaces of the pit and trench are treated with a thick layer of 10 cm of fatty clay, carefully leveled and smoothed.
Note: The trench is designed as a tray with an outward slope to allow water to flow freely into the well.
Sand fills the pit and trench inside the restroom, or it is partially filled with gravel and then sand. One meter of sand or gravel is piled into the drainage well and trench outside. Sand and gravel work as a sort of filter to remove soap and other chemicals that are bad for the environment from water. Most owners can afford such a structure because of its reasonable price.
Although it costs more, a more intricate waste water drainage design offers superior cleaning. A diagram and implementation instructions will aid in achieving the intended outcome:
- From the inclined floor covering, water first flows into the drain, the box of which can be made of stainless steel or concrete.
- From the drain, water flows down to the drain pipe.
- The box is equipped with a branch pipe raised 10 cm from the bottom and a steel plate installed at an angle with an indentation of 4-5 cm from the bottom. The upper and side parts of the plate are hermetically secured, and the top of the drain passage is covered with a lid with holes made.
- The water lock prevents unpleasant odors from blooming water and cold air from penetrating into the room, the result is a warm floor.
- The joint of the drain pipes is caulked and coated with cement mortar.
Note: Excavate an inspection well no closer than 2 meters from the foundation in order to clear obstructions from pipes.
Wall and ceiling finishing
Finishing the washroom with ceramic tiles is preferable for its durability and practicality, ease of maintenance and hygiene. For years, it has passed the test of strength and has withstood it for suitability.
Why ceramic tiles and their varieties? The interior decoration of the washroom requires moisture-resistant materials.
Hygienic standards recommend lining the walls of the washroom with ceramic tiles to a height of at least 1.8 m, the rest of the space is plastered, whitewashed, painted with water-repellent agents. The design of the tiles suits any interior, adds solidity and does not spoil the appearance.
The finishing of the washroom tiles in the bathhouse can be done completely on all the walls, or it can be combined with other materials.
The walls in the washing area are covered with wooden slats, pre-treated with antiseptic compounds. In this method, the parts are placed tightly to prevent moisture inside the lining and the appearance of mold.
The interior decoration of the washing area in a wooden bathhouse is made of coniferous materials, although the ideal option is larch, which does not rot in water. Spruce and pine will also last a long time if you provide proper care for them and timely ventilation and drying of the room.
The ceiling in the washing area of the bathhouse is also not ignored. Its device is made of the same materials as the walls. The ceiling is insulated from the outside.
Moisture should not be present in the attic and accumulate in its upper part.In a bathhouse made of timber, it is covered with boards at least 6 cm thick.
The top is finished with foil and paper with wax, sprinkled with soft clay and insulated with mineral insulation, sawdust. Final screeding with cement and sand is made.
The interior decoration of the washroom in the bathhouse can be considered complete and welcome.
The durability and aesthetic appeal of a bathhouse sink can be greatly influenced by the material choice made for its finishing. Different materials, such as tile, stone, or synthetic materials, each have unique advantages and styles. This guide examines these various materials to assist you in selecting the ideal option for your bathroom sink that satisfies both your aesthetic and functional requirements.
