How to paint a wooden door at home

A wooden door can be given a new look at home without breaking the bank by painting it. A new coat of paint can make a big difference, whether you’re painting an old door that needs some TLC or just want to change the color.

A professional-looking finish is achievable with the right equipment and a little perseverance. You can follow along with this guide to learn how to prep the door, select the appropriate paint, and apply it correctly. You don’t need to hire an expert to paint your door; just follow these simple steps, and your door will look gorgeous in no time.

Step Description
1. Prepare the Door Remove the door from its hinges, take off any hardware, and sand the surface to remove old paint or varnish.
2. Clean the Surface Wipe down the door with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris, ensuring a smooth surface for painting.
3. Apply Primer Use a high-quality primer to cover the door, allowing it to dry completely. This ensures the paint adheres properly.
4. Paint the Door Apply the first coat of paint using a brush or roller, starting from the edges and working your way in. Let it dry before adding a second coat.
5. Reattach Hardware Once the paint is fully dry, reattach the door hardware, and hang the door back on its hinges.

Preparing the canvas for painting

There is a peculiar trend in Russia these days that holds that the only way to build rich, comfortable homes with exquisite interior design is to use the products of modern industry on a large scale. This is mostly because of the countless TV series and movies that feature commercials that portray these interiors in a positive light.

However, the exact opposite trend has emerged globally. For instance, handicrafts are still highly prized in Europe, where people use old, unnecessary items as raw materials to make a variety of handmade items for their homes. This is not unusual, either, as it is well known that these crafts are consistently of outstanding quality and unique design.

Furthermore, whole design movements devoted to transforming antique objects into contemporary home furnishings have surfaced in recent years.

Door cleaning

An old door that has been repeatedly repainted while in use is not an exception to the rule; as a result, it has lost its glossy, attractive appearance. These days, producers strive to make their goods as inexpensively as possible, even at the expense of quality. As a result, all budget and middle-class doors are modular and essentially composed of paper. But that was a different story once.

Wood was a very readily available material, so it’s highly likely that your old friend is made of natural wood, possibly hardwood.

When you notice the door in the above photo, don’t freak out. You can achieve perfect condition on nearly any canvas with the appropriate method.

There are various steps involved in door restoration:

  • Removing the old coating using mechanical, thermal or chemical methods;
  • Restoring the integrity of the surface;
  • Sanding;
  • Applying paints and varnishes.

But let’s approach things sequentially. You have to set up the workspace first. Every task must be completed in a spotless, well-ventilated room with plenty of light. The canvas works best when positioned horizontally, like on a workbench. If you don’t have one, an old table or, in dire circumstances, the floor will work just fine.

Cellophane film should be placed over the work surface and secured with adhesive tape. After that, we take our door leaf off of its hinges, take apart the glass and fixtures, and start cleaning the old enamel off of it (see. Follow the instructions to remove paint from wood.

  • Mechanical method of removing paint – the most labor-intensive. So, if peeling areas are easily cleaned with a spatula, then this tool is not suitable for cleaning well-painted areas. Rough sandpaper or electrical grinding equipment are used. Another significant disadvantage of this method is the possibility of damaging the texture of the wood, so you have to be quite careful.
  • The next method is thermal. Its essence is quite simple and consists in the fact that the paint needs to be softened by heating the surface to a certain temperature, and then scraping it off with a spatula. This procedure is performed using a hair dryer or a gas burner. A hair dryer is preferable for amateurs, as it is a safer tool. When working with a burner, you must exercise extreme caution and remove all flammable substances as far away as possible. When processing the surface, it must not be overheated, otherwise you risk burning the wood or starting a fire.
  • The last method is to use chemical enamel softeners, which are suitable for most types of paint. After applying such a composition, you will see that the door surface is covered with bubbles, after which cleaning is carried out. The average action time varies from 5 to 10 minutes. More accurate data will be indicated in the instructions for the product you purchased.

Take note! When working with chemicals, use skin and respiratory protection in an area with plenty of fresh air.

Spackling and sanding

It’s likely that many tiny chips and cracks will be visible beneath the removed paint, and these must be fixed before you begin painting. You will need wood filler or a specific type of mastic for this.

  • Before applying the filler, clean the area around the crack with fine sandpaper. Then carefully remove the dust with a damp sponge or a can of compressed air, and prime the crack using a regular paint brush. The primer itself must be suitable for wood work, otherwise you risk getting the opposite effect.
  • Give some time for the primer to be absorbed, and carefully cover the crack in the following way. To avoid air getting inside, apply the mixture in short strokes perpendicular to the direction of the crack, gradually filling its inner space. Remove excess mixture and leave the treated part for a short time, thereby allowing the putty to set (see. Wood putty: how to do it wisely).
  • After a few minutes, coat this area again, achieving the best evenness of the surface. If this does not work for you, and the surface constantly forms a depression, then repeat this procedure (with intermediate short drying) as many times as necessary. To continue finishing, you must wait until it dries completely.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that this technique for removing surface flaws is purely decorative and is not appropriate for drilled holes, extremely deep potholes, or particularly broken elements. In this scenario, you will need to replace the broken pieces with new ones and use putty to smooth out the joints. However, there is a lot to this subject, and we will cover it in one of the upcoming articles.

Counseling! Use reinforced alkyd-based compounds to seal potholes on the ends of the door. These compounds are more elastic and durable, making them more resistant to mechanical stress and enabling the sealing of large spaces.

Sanding the entire surface of the door is required once the putty has fully dried. Using a sanding machine is the most convenient method; if one is not available, zero sandpaper is used. Take great care to cover the entire canvas; if not, there’s a chance that the imperfections will show up when the door is painted.
