Homemade putty: why is it needed?
Numerous companies produce wood putty. Furthermore, there are numerous benefits to this material that are hard to overstate. It’s so simple to use that even a non-expert can handle it. Following application, it dries quickly, creating a surface that is nearly perfect. However, we must not overlook a number of drawbacks:
- if you need to work on large areas of a wooden surface, it turns out that the cost of the putty can be significant;
- it does not provide the necessary strength;
- it is not always possible to buy a truly high-quality material, often simple putty is sold under the guise of a wood mixture.
Wood is a material that requires some work. Trying to work with it can be very challenging. The truth is that it takes on entirely different characteristics at specific temperature indicators. For instance, it contracts in a cold environment and consequently expands in a warm environment. The result is surface warping. Low-quality putty has many cracks all over it as a result.
This is the point at which creating a putty that satisfies numerous requirements becomes necessary. Specifically:
- was strong, but elastic;
- from environmental influences – did not crack;
- it could be made by hand – without losing the necessary qualities;
- any changes in the characteristics of the wood – would not give defects.
While store-bought wood putty is generally excellent, it may not always possess the required qualities. You can therefore make it yourself.

You can make the mixture with your hands in a few different ways. They are easy to make at home. All you will have to do is buy the parts that are required. Okay, let’s think about the easiest choices.
1. Putty made from a chalk and PVA blend. This arrangement is thought to be the most basic. Making it is simple:
- chalk, in the form of a small fraction, is diluted in PVA, the composition is brought to homogeneity;
- the mixing process continues until a mixture is obtained that resembles sour cream in consistency;
- if it is necessary to seal cracks, seams, then sawdust is added;
- after application, the solution dries for about a day.
2. Water-soluble varnish and chalk mixture. Large financial outlays are not necessary for such a composition. After all, inexpensive varnish is used in place of PVA. The tasks are completed in the same order as in the prior edition. Furthermore, this type of DIY putty proves to be far more elastic and robust. Adding color makes the desired color appear. Even chipboard and OSB work can be done with it. It is preferable to follow the following schedule when getting ready:
- it is better to start mixing in the evening, then by the morning you can get a ready-made solution;
- varnish and chalk are mixed, it is necessary to obtain a paste-like consistency;
- it doesn"t matter if it"s a bit thick, you can add a little water;
- in case of starting work – add sawdust;
- drying time up to 12 hours.
3. A mixture of oil and drying oil combined. You’ll need the following for this:
- flax oil – two hundred and eighty grams, turpentine oil – sixty grams;
- perlite (pumice powder) – thirty grams;
- casein – twenty grams;
- gelatin – twenty grams;
- borax – twelve grams;
- ammonia 18% – eighteen grams.
Here is the sequence in which things should be completed. Combine the pumice and oil. To the resulting mixture, add 300 grams of water. After that, stir in the remaining ingredients. In a water bath, the resultant solution is heated to 90 °C. In order to achieve a homogenous structure, thoroughly mix everything. When the mixture starts to resemble a paste, it is said to be ready. After that, take it off the heat, allow it to cool, and use. It has an hour to maintain its properties.
Be aware of this! You can change the number of ingredients. You can only acquire the exact traits needed in that manner.
4. Wood putty composed of nitro varnish, chalk, and sawdust. This composition is intended for outdoor work and use in non-residential settings. The truth is that the solution takes on an unpleasant odor after application as a result of the nitro varnish added to it. It is nearly impossible to remove. The method of preparation is the same as it was for the earlier compositions: you must obtain a creamy mixture.
With a few simple ingredients and a straightforward process, anyone can make their own wood putty. Sawdust and binder combined yield a filler that blends in seamlessly with your wood, guaranteeing smooth repairs and a natural appearance.
This do-it-yourself approach is not only less expensive, but it also allows you to customize the putty’s color and consistency. A flexible solution that can be customized to meet your unique requirements, homemade wood putty can be used to fill in larger gaps or smaller cracks.
Consider creating your own wood putty the next time you work on a woodworking project. It’s a simple, useful technique to maintain the neat, polished appearance of your work.
