A fresco is a creative and satisfying do-it-yourself project that turns a blank wall into a one-of-a-kind work of art. You can create a gorgeous and distinctive decoration that expresses your creativity and sense of style by following a few simple steps: priming your wall, outlining your design, and adding pigment.

Types and features of applying frescoes

What are the wall-mounted frescoes? Many owners of regular apartments who wish to add exclusivity to the interior while showcasing their creativity and doing everything by hand can choose this style of room decoration.

Furthermore, the creation of frescoes on walls offers advantages like:

  • Freedom of creativity. At the same time, there is no need to spend a long time searching in stores for something original, beautiful and at the same time stylish, which would not only be to your liking, but also affordable. All you need is to decide on your capabilities and choose a plot.
  • Any image created by your own hands is already exclusive – no one else has it in such a version.
  • When decorating only one of the walls, leaving the rest as is, you can apply frescoes yourself, adapting to the existing interior style, as can be seen in the photo.

Interior frescoes are a reasonably priced delight.

Wall painting ideas include:

  • Classical. This is wall painting applying an image to wet plaster. A feature of traditional painting is its labor intensity. All work must be completed in a maximum of 24 hours, and there is no opportunity to correct anything. The price of this fresco application technology is the highest of all available, the most labor-intensive, which does not allow any homeowner to do it themselves.

  • On canvas. This image combines natural materials and the artist"s skill. The drawing is applied to the canvas by hand on top of a special composition. Natural pigments are used as paints. To give the fresco realism, it is artificially aged. After covering the canvas with wax, such a decorative element can last a long time.

  • On a self-adhesive base. They can be compared with photo wallpaper (see. Photo wallpaper frescoes: how to choose the right one) or textured wallpaper. The basis of this decorative element is a thin layer of plaster made on the basis of a special paste from river sand, which is applied to a self-adhesive base that is fixed to the wall without any additional materials or tools. The small thickness of the coating does not mask defects on the wall.

Advice: More surface preparation is necessary before applying self-adhesive.

Absence of coverage: it is impossible to perform extra processing, like adding an aging effect.

  • On non-woven fabric. Such frescoes are widely used when decorating large areas. Externally, decorative elements of this type are practically no different from frescoes made on canvas, but the production method is based on modern technologies with complex technical techniques. The image itself is produced on a printer, where the paper is replaced by a base for non-woven wallpaper. The drawing can be from almost any picture or photograph. The effect of a complete picture is created by several fragments with joints invisible to the naked eye, subject to printing and installation technology.
  • On a rigid basis. Various coatings and materials can be used for the base of the fresco: plastic, wood and even ceramics. With such a base, you can imitate cracks and chips, which will give the product an aging effect. The only drawback of this method is the relatively large mass of elements, which significantly reduces the size of frescoes of this type.
  • The interior of a small bedroom, a small kitchen or a small hallway can be harmoniously complemented by a small fresco, but it does not look very appropriate surrounded by a large unoccupied space in the room.
  • A fresco made on elastic plaster is quite close in appearance to the classic one. But unlike it, elastic plaster does not dry as quickly, which allows the master to do the work more thoroughly. Due to the manual application of the image to the wall, the price of this method of decorating a room is quite high.

Advice: Having a wide range of painting options lets you consider the room’s purpose in addition to the owner’s preferences. A fresco in the bathroom should encourage enjoyment and calm before bed; in the kitchen, vibrant and rich colors should be used to charge a person with positive energy for the entire day; and in the bedroom, a fresco should encourage calmness.

How to prepare a surface for frescoes

Applying a life-size fresco marking to a wall surface that has been properly prepared will make the applied drawing more durable.

Surface preparation phases:

  • The old coating is removed.
  • All defects are carefully repaired.
  • Dust is thoroughly swept off the wall with a dry cloth or brush.
  • The surface is covered with a primer (see. Priming walls and everything on this issue), which will improve adhesion with plaster compositions.
  • Wall defects are corrected using ordinary cement plaster and good putty. At the same time, all cracks and potholes on the surface are repaired.
  • The plane is lightly sanded with a flat board, previously moistened with water.
  • After drying, the wall is again primed, after absorbing the solution, the main layer of plaster is applied. It must be of good quality based on cement and sand.

Advice: A small amount of a binder, such as plasticizers or gypsum, should be added to the composition to improve the coating’s qualities.

  • Light grouting of the plaster is done again.
  • The wall is covered with putty.
  • After drying, the surface is primed. In this case, the primer composition must be of high quality, to fix the paint and prevent dampness or fungus from appearing on the wall.
Step Description
1. Prepare the Wall Clean the surface and apply a base coat.
2. Sketch the Design Draw your fresco design on the wall using a pencil.
3. Mix the Plaster Prepare the plaster and apply it in a thin layer over the sketch.
4. Paint the Fresco Use water-based paints to color the plaster before it dries.
5. Seal the Fresco Apply a protective varnish to preserve the artwork.
