A brick wall can have siding attached to it to improve the appearance of your house and provide an additional layer of security. Siding can breathe new life into an old, worn-out brick exterior and give your home a modern, fresh look. Siding is a useful and attractive option if you want to make a change or simply want to increase curb appeal.
It’s crucial to realize that there are some preparations involved in attaching siding to a brick wall before beginning the project. Although brick is a strong and resilient material, siding requires a smooth surface, which brick does not naturally offer. You must build a sturdy foundation for the siding to be attached to in order to guarantee a safe and durable installation.
We’ll take you step-by-step through the entire process in this post, from preparing the brick wall to selecting the appropriate materials to installing the siding. Whether you’re an experienced do-it-yourselfer or a novice, you can complete this project with the correct advice.
Step | Description |
1. Prepare the wall | Clean the brick surface, remove any loose material, and repair any cracks. |
2. Install the furring strips | Attach wooden or metal strips vertically to the wall, ensuring they are level and secure. |
3. Add insulation (optional) | If needed, place insulation between the furring strips for added energy efficiency. |
4. Attach the starter strip | Install a starter strip at the bottom of the wall to hold the first row of siding. |
5. Install the siding panels | Begin attaching the siding panels from the bottom up, securing them to the furring strips. |
6. Finish with trim | Add trim pieces around windows, doors, and corners to complete the look. |

The procedure for installing siding
Siding installation is a straightforward technological process; the key is to purchase high-quality materials and components and follow a specific order of operation. This will ultimately determine the geometry of the installation and the longevity of the structure. Let’s examine the details of correctly installing siding on walls.
Tools for siding
Ensure you have the following components before you begin siding installation:
- Grinding machine or saw with small teeth
- Scissors for cutting metal products
- Screwdriver, tool for screwing in bolts
- Hammer
- Tape measure (preferably laser, which will greatly facilitate the work), square, level
- Portable ladder, its level should be sufficient to easily reach the roof
Developers of siding have produced an entire range of components and panels that can be used to clad even the most intricately designed residential buildings. A specialist only needs to receive a thorough description of the client’s house in order to determine how many siding components are required on their own.
We make the correct calculation
Many extra components are used to fasten siding to a brick wall. They will greatly improve the quality of the work and are publicly available.
The following parts are needed when working with siding:
- The height of the outer corner should be three meters. If the room consists of one floor, then whole elements must be used for all outer corners. If the walls are higher than three meters, then the length of the corners is added up, after which the resulting sum must be divided by three. It is extremely important to leave free space for joining. The use of outer corners has not only aesthetic and decorative value. Corners are also used to cover siding ends.
- You can calculate internal angles using the principle of external ones. If the roof overhang is covered with siding, then internal angles should be used at the places where it joins the wall. When finishing work with a roof overhang, a soffit and a wind strip are used. If the cornice remains intact, then using a finishing strip will be the right decision.
- Use a J-profile in those areas where the roof layout differs, or when several extensions are connected.
- Sheathe the windows with a strip, carefully place the ebbs.
- Install a drain strip at the foot of the wall. If its width is insufficient, use ebbs.
- If the length of the house is more than 3.66 m, use an H-profile for fastening. At the same time, try to keep the ratio of the house the same.
- If you do not know how many panels are needed for siding, then use a special calculation formula: (footage of the walls of the house – footage of windows and doors / footage of the panel) * 1.10.
- When installing, it is best to use galvanized screws, which easily leave the interval necessary for fastening. For 1 sq.m. usually there are 2 screws. If there is a possibility of purchasing screws with a rubberized washer, then be sure to buy them. They serve as a guarantee that rust will not occur in the future.
Let’s now examine how to prepare a wall for siding, which requires a number of procedures. Remove any protruding components first, including doors, platbands, lattice installations, etc.
If the space has any cracks, use cement to fill them in. If there are areas of the walls that are rotten, covered in dirt, or have old paint, treat them.
Make sure to apply anti-rot agents to the house if it is constructed of wood. If the house is to be covered with foam concrete blocks, a primer can be applied to the walls to finish them (refer to Priming the walls and everything on this issue).
Installation of the lathing
Installing a metal or wood lathing is required prior to fastening the panels to the wall. You have a choice here. However, metal is thought to be more robust. Though there are instances when using a wooden beam is just more practical.
Note: If you decide to use wood for the frame, you should treat it with antiseptics before using it. This will greatly increase the lifespan of the frame.
- First of all, the external strapping is done. The profile is fastened along the contour of the wall. But if you will also do insulation (see. How to insulate walls with foam plastic with your own hands), then you need to choose the desired installation height. It should be a couple of cm more than the thickness of the insulation. After all, it should not deform, otherwise it will lose its properties.
- A special profile for gypsum plaster can be suitable as a profile. In the case of free fastening of a vinyl profile to a building made of wood or a frame, it is allowed to fasten 60 * 40 mm bars. Do not forget to cover the slats with an anti-rot agent and make sure that they are dry.
- Use a tape measure and a level to draw lines. Ultimately, you will get a closed contour. Then measure the gap in the corners from the drawn line to the outer wall of the building. Set the smallest value and draw the contour again. In subsequent work, this line will be intended for installing the starting strip. It is extremely important that the line matches the level. Any deviation can lead to a crookedness of the facing panel.
- Start installing vertical guides from the corners. It is extremely important that the elements adhere firmly to the wall. To achieve the desired result, you can slip wooden slices under them. The guides should be 30-40 cm apart from each other.
- Install guides where working with the sheathing will require even more stress. This applies to street lamps, entrance doors. Never combine guides together. This can lead to the appearance of various obstacles to ventilation, for example, mold may appear.
Be aware that the cross guides’ height and the contour’s height need to match. Furthermore, spacers are used to change the height.
Waterproofing protection and insulation
Waterproofing must be installed if the house is constructed of wood or aerated concrete. Furthermore, you are free to insulate the house.
- If you have finally decided to insulate the living space, then use a special membrane as a material that will not allow moisture and wind to penetrate the room.
- At the final stage of installing the layer, waterproofing is applied on top of it. Then a covering is created from the lathing, which allows you to create intervals for ventilation.
- If you are fastening the insulation, then do not deform its mats. The connection is made using plastic parachutes.
You can add a layer of weather resistance and drastically change the appearance of your home by installing siding on a brick wall. Although there is some preparation involved, most do-it-yourself enthusiasts can complete the task with the correct tools and supplies.
First, make sure there is no loose debris and that the brick surface is clean. To build a sturdy foundation for the siding, furring strips or an appropriate framework must be installed. This helps to ensure that the siding panels are securely fastened and also offers a smooth surface for an expert finish.
Siding that is installed correctly and adheres to manufacturer installation instructions will look fantastic and remain secure for many years to come. Remember to allow space for expansion and make sure there is enough ventilation to avoid moisture accumulation.
Your brick wall can be turned into a gorgeous exterior that raises the curb appeal and value of your house with thorough planning and attention to detail.
Siding is an easy way to add extra insulation and improve the appearance of your home when attached to a brick wall. In order to securely fasten the siding, a stable framework must be created. Furring strips or a similar material are typically used in this process. A long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing finish that can change the appearance of any brick structure is ensured by careful planning and execution.
