Features of the GSP board: types, characteristics and application

Gypsum particleboards, or GSP boards, are becoming more and more common in a variety of building and remodeling projects. Combining the advantages of wood and gypsum particles, they have special qualities that allow them to be used in a variety of wall decoration applications.

There are various varieties of these boards, and each is intended for a particular use. There’s probably a GSP board out there that works for interior walls, ceilings, or specific environments that you require. Selecting the appropriate material for your project can be made easier if you are aware of the various types and their unique qualities.

What distinguishes GSP boards are their qualities rather than just their types. Because of their strength, durability, fire resistance, and sound-absorbing qualities, these boards provide a flexible answer for a variety of building requirements. What is GSP?

Interpretation of the acronym "gypsum chipboard." Due to the material’s recent introduction to the domestic market and the small number of businesses producing it, some of the slabs are imported, which raises the price.

Products are made from a combination of two primary ingredients: chips (15%) and gypsum (up to 83%). Water and unique additives that raise the parts’ technical specifications make up 2% of the mixture. They have a similar composition to gypsum fiber boards, but they also include cellulose fibers, which serve as reinforcing elements.

Using GSP manufacturing technology, wood raw materials are first cleaned, then crushed to the appropriate size and moistened, resulting in a very dependable connection. The chips are combined with a small amount of liquid, modifiers, and gypsum. The necessary consistency is sent in bulk to the press, where it takes on the format that is needed. The finished item is put in the last drying shop.

This production process gives the material operational characteristics that set it apart from other types.

Because of their strength and adaptability, GSP boards are a common option for contemporary wall décor. These boards are available in multiple varieties, each with distinct qualities that suit a range of applications, from home improvement to commercial endeavors. GSP boards are a useful and fashionable choice for smooth, high-quality wall construction because of their simplicity of installation, robustness, and capacity to improve interior design appeal.

Material characteristics

Signs of gypsum board quality:

  • Durability. The density of the products is about 1250 kg / m3, so they are able to withstand longitudinal and transverse loads, as well as maintain integrity under significant mechanical impact. Unlike many materials, sheets have bending strength, which is reflected in the resistance indicators – from 8 to 16 MPa. Graduation depends on the thickness of the fragment.
  • Ecological friendliness. The products do not contain components harmful to human and animal health. The only problem may be the suspension that forms during processing, so it is recommended to work in a respirator.
  • Fire safety. Due to the gypsum in the composition, the cladding does not spread flames. Unlike plasterboard, the parts are additionally reinforced with chips, so they retain their structure for a long time when exposed to fire, which gives time to leave the room. When exposed to high temperatures, harmful substances are not released.
  • Moisture resistance. The level of resistance depends on the processing: standard options have water absorption of up to 30% when in water for 2 hours, and parts with a special additive – only 10%.
  • Sound insulation. This property allows the panels to additionally protect the room from noise pollution. Insulation index – about 32–35 dB.
  • Increasing the energy efficiency of the building. This is achieved due to thermal conductivity, which ranges from 0.21 to 0.25 W/(m°C).

In addition, the material resists insects and mold and can only be processed and installed by hand.

Sheet size

The sizes of products made of gypsum chipboard are as follows:

  1. Thickness – from 8 to 12 mm.
  2. Length – 50–300 cm.
  3. Width – 125 cm.

Typically, the products are separated into two primary groups based on the values that are available:

  • With a thickness of 10 mm and a weight of 12.5 kg/m2 – 125*250 cm and 125*300 cm.
  • With a thickness of 12 mm and a weight of 15 kg/m2 – 125*50 cm, 125*250 cm and 125*300 cm.

Numerous producers create series of parts with uniform dimensions.

It is imperative to clarify the products’ availability as 8 mm of thickness is thought to be extremely rare.

Types and scope of application

There are two types of GSP sheets: regular and GSPV, or "moisture-resistant gypsum chipboard."

Since products can be used for both finishing and rough work, it is common practice to categorize them according to their decorative qualities:

  1. Painted.
  2. Vinyl.
  3. With PVC coating.
  4. With polymer cladding.

These expensive boards are utilized in the following scenarios:

  • Wall cladding. The parts have a flat surface and serve as an excellent replacement for long-term leveling with plaster. In addition, chipboard sheets protect against extraneous noise and heat loss.
  • Erection of partitions. The material has good density and rigidity, which makes the structures reliable and durable. It will take little time to create them, special installation skills are also not needed.
  • Floor laying. The products are ideal for the device of "dry" screed. Parts have the required wear resistance and durability. This base is also used for laying tiles.

The products are not only useful for interior work but also for outdoor applications, such as cladding wooden or metal structures.

Comparison with GVL and GKL

The majority of the time, GSP is mistakenly thought of as a plasterboard material substitute. With the exception of cost, which is twice as much, gypsum chipboards are superior to GKL in all aspects and differ significantly from them.

Consequently, it is necessary to compare GVL and GSP:

  1. In terms of density, the options have similar indicators, but in terms of bending strength, chipboard products have an advantage.
  2. Gypsum fiber boards also lose in terms of resistance to screw removal. GVL is well suited for hanging various interior items, but GSP can withstand a load twice as large, creating maximum safety.
  3. Particle sheets provide the room with slightly better thermal insulation.

Despite the material’s positive differences from alternatives, its use is restricted because of its low prevalence.

Note: After the coating is correctly transferred and fixed, the surface can be painted, wallpapered, or embellished with decorative plaster, removing the need for complex and time-consuming preparation.

Type Features
