Furniture ages or even appears bland and unremarkable when it is brand-new. In a different scenario, you might have purchased a kitchen table, an appliance shelf, or another similarly beneficial addition to the group. But eventually you realize that your purchase doesn’t match the interior design. How can the situation be resolved?
Naturally, decoupage from wallpaper will work well as a fix. Wallpaper leftover from the previous renovation can be used. In this instance, the interior of the room and the decoratively decorated furniture will appear to be one cohesive piece.
If after the renovations there isn’t any more wallpaper, you can use postcards, pieces of calendars, magazine clippings, and other similar seemingly pointless items. (See also the article Types of wallpaper featuring imitation plaster.)
Features of decorating furniture with wallpaper
Wallpaper decoupage on a wardrobe is a special way to breathe new life into vintage furniture.
Although there are currently a lot of ideas for decorating the entourage, the use of leftover wallpaper is thought to be the most common because it is readily available. Since the cost of the ornamental material in this instance is one penny, the overall cost will be minimal.
If multiple cuts are made instead of just one, the outcome will be more potent. As a result, you can use the so-called patchwork technique to decorate specific surfaces by cutting out individual patterns.
Advice: Avoid taking on intricate surface finishing if you are just beginning to learn how to decoupage furniture. For instance, a refrigerator’s numerous flat surfaces make it simple to cover. Once again, pasting an old table will help you gain experience.
Throwing away the old furniture won’t be a bad idea if decoupage doesn’t work. If everything goes according to plan, the unusual piece will have a respectable place in your home or apartment.

Before we begin decorating, let’s get the supplies and equipment ready.
Thus, the following will be required:
- several cuts from different wallpaper rolls;
- transparent acrylic varnish;
- special glue for decoupage;
- narrow and medium flat brushes with soft bristles;
- velor roller;
- medium and fine sandpaper;
- paper scissors.
Apart from the aforementioned, we will require used furniture. Let’s use an unnecessary table as an example to discuss the simplest method for decoupaging wallpaper onto furniture that you can do yourself.
A simple way to decorate
- At the first stage, carefully wash the decorated surface from dirt. After the cleaned surface has dried, take medium-grain sandpaper and clean the table top.
Having removed the main irregularities, take fine-grain sandpaper and sand everything finally to an optimal smoothness. Next, wet a clean lint-free cloth in a thinner such as White Spirit and wipe off all dust and dirt from the prepared table top.
Important: It is advisable to fix the sandpaper on a special paint float in order to level the coating. You can get a relief instead of a flat surface if you sand the table top while holding the paper in your hand.
Sanding the top of the table in the picture
- After the surface is ready, we proceed to decorating. If we use one roll of wallpaper, as in our case, measure a piece along the length of the table and cut it off. If we use many different pieces of wallpaper, cut them so that when laid on the countertop, they form a single composition.
The success of this work largely depends only on your imagination and the range of available materials. - Next, apply glue to the tabletop and paper with a wide brush. Then set a timer for 5 minutes and apply wallpaper to the glue-covered base. Fix the canvas on one side and gradually smooth it out, distributing it over the entire tabletop.
A velor paint roller will help to disperse the folds, which we roll over the entire tabletop from the center to the edges. Work carefully with the roller, trying not to tear the paper.
Sanding the pasted tabletop is seen in the picture.
- After the wallpaper glue has completely dried, take sandpaper and sand the edges, removing excess paper.
- Next, take a brush and apply an even layer of acrylic varnish over the pasted wallpaper.
In theory, we experimented with a straightforward furniture decoupage technique. If all goes well, the table can be set up in the kitchen or, if one exists, in a gazebo on the street. (Cm. Additionally, the gazebo’s article decoration: Features.)
Now consider a more intricate way to combine the pieces of wallpaper with other elements to create a more eye-catching decorative effect.
A more advanced way
Application of different ornamental components
Our goal is to make the task more difficult by using decoupage to create a decorative surface that is not flat but still relief-like.
The initial stages of the work are precisely the same as those in the method that was previously explained. We also apply the wallpaper in one piece to the surface that has been prepped. In this instance, the first layer will be fundamental and serve as the overall backdrop for the entire composition.
Additionally, specific geometric shapes are cut out of different paper fragments and pasted around the countertop’s perimeter, leaving an indentation a few centimeters from the edge. We make the same, smaller cuts and glue the pieces on top of each other.
In the following layer, we arrange smaller pieces and t.D. You can create a total of 10–20 layers to embosse the geometric figures surrounding the perimeter and make them look like truncated pyramids. We decided to use pieces of paper with varying colors, so the result should be really intriguing. You can use the leaves to create applications in the center of the countertop.
Important note: You can glue it immediately if we gather the leaves in the fall and they are already dry. In order to prevent the summertime leaves from rotting beneath a coat of varnish, they must be iron-dried.
The contours of glued leaves can be circled with a transparent silicone sealant to create an intriguing aesthetic effect that will add volume to the application. Acrylic varnish is typically used to cover the final product.
